April 9, 2017 CORAL GABLES, Fla. - It was a successful day for the Villanova sprinters on Saturday afternoon, as sophomore Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) won the 800 meters at the Hurricane Invitational to highlight a number of strong results for the Wildcats. Lampinen paced a field of two dozen runners in the 800 meters at Cobb Stadium. Villanova also tallied an eighth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay and a pair of top-eight finishes in the pole vault.
Lampinen crossed the finish line with a winning time of 1:50.81 and beat out runner-up Dante Watson of Pittsburgh by just over a second. Fellow sophomores Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland) and Sterling Pierce (Voorhees, N.J.) also ran well for the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. Purcell finished ninth out of 34 runners in the 400 meters with a time of 48.19, while Pierce recorded times of 10.97 in the 100 meters and 22.01 in the 200 meters.
The other individual race Villanova competed in was the 400 meter hurdles. Senior Kyle Cartwright (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) notched his best time of the season with a mark of 53.83, while freshman Konrad Bayer (Naperville, Ill.) crossed the finish line in 56.58.
A group that consisted of Cartwright, Purcell, Pierce and Lampinen tallied a time of 3:15.09 in the 4x400 meter relay and finished eighth in a field of 14 teams.
Junior James Deutmeyer (Rye, N.Y.) and freshman Thomas Conboy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) competed in the pole vault. Deutmeyer matched his best mark of the season with a height of 4.75 meters, while Conboy had a successful attempt at 4.45 meters. They came in fourth and sixth, respectively.
