MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 23, 2004) - The West Virginia University men's soccer team knocked off Villanova 1-0 on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (9-6-0) jumped on the Wildcats (6-4-4) from the onset, keeping the ball in Villanova's defensive third for much of the first half.
Junior midfielder Devon Mct Tavish scored the only goal of the match in the 11th minute of play when senior Aaron Pitchkolan flipped a pass into the air to him. McTavish drilled the ball with a volley from ten yards out into the left upper 90 to score his fifth goal of the season. Villanova came out with much more intensity in the second half as they fired off five shots in the second compared to WVU's three. They almost received a gift as well when a shot slipped through the grip of goalkeeper Nick Noble and hit the crossbar. However, the ball fell straight down and Noble was able to collect it before it went in.
The shutout marks Noble's third solo shutout of the season and the ninth of his career.
The win moves WVU up to seventh place in the conference standings and one point behind sixth place Georgetown. Eight teams move on to the BIG EAST tournament at the end of the season.
Villanova returns to the Main Line to complete its regular season with three consecutive home games. The first of those takes place on Tuesday, when Lafayette comes to the Soccer Complex for a game that gets underway at 2:00 p.m.
