Villanova, Pa. - Jochen Strobel scored a pair of goals to lead Hofstra past the Villanova Wildcats by the count of 3-1 on Sunday at the Villanova Soccer Complex. Hofstra improves to 5-1-1 with the non-conference victory while the 'Cats drop to 2-8-0 overall, 0-4-0 in the Big East.
Strobel wasted no time in lifting the Pride into the lead. He collected a deflected shot and deposited it behind Wildcats goalkeeper Jon Williams at the 12:00 mark to give Hofstra the 1-0 edge. Paul Saccoccio, who took the original shot, was credited with an assist on the play.
Villanova ended its 426 minute scoring drought with just 21 seconds remaining on the clock in the first half. Sophomore Jonathan Lopuski (Montville, N.J.) tapped the ball to junior David O'Donnell (Nashua, N.J.). O'Donnell then knocked a low shot past Hofstra goalie D.J. Greening to knot matters at one.
Hofstra went ahead for good in the 51st minute. Saccoccio took a feed from Jason Gates and slipped it past Williams to make it 2-1. Strobel then completed the scoring in the 65th minute when he finished a ball from Billy Chung and found the back of the net with his attempt.
The game was a chippy affair with a total of 39 fouls called, two red cards and four yellows.
Villanova returns to Big East play on Wednesday evening when it visits Syracuse at 7:00 p.m.
