Drexel Upends Men's Soccer 3-1

Oct. 6, 2002

Villanova, Pa. - A pair of goals in the first 12 minutes helped boost Drexel to a 3-1 Philadelphia Soccer Seven victory over the Villanova Wildcats here on Sunday afternoon.

Drexel tallied a goal before most of the fans on this picturesque fall day had a chance to get settled in their seats. On the game's first shot Pete Pittaoulis lofted a ball over the outstretched arm of Villanova goalkeeper Jon Williams at the two minute mark to give the Dragons an early 1-0 edge.

A blast off the foot of Justin Sadler at the 12:06 mark beat Williams and suddenly the Dragons were in charge with a 2-0 lead. Dominic Balsamo was credited with an assist on the goal.

The Wildcats broke into the scoring column when junior David O'Donnell's free kick from outside the top of the box deflected off a Dragon defender and past Drexel goalie Jim Greco in the 27th minute. The score remained 2-1 at intermission.

In the second half Drexel gave itself some breathing room when Kevin Domanski took a pass from Balsamo and beat Williams in the 67th minute.

Villanova (3-9-0, 1-2-0 Soccer Seven) outshot the Dragons 20-14 on the afternoon. Greco made six saves in posting the win for the Dragons (6-4-0).

Next up for Villanova is a Big East Conference road trip to Washington, D.C., where the 'Cats will face Georgetown at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
