Junior forward Hughroy Daley scored at the 28:55 mark of the first half and senior goalkeeper Andrew Brooke had five saves as the Hofstra men's soccer team defeated Villanova 1-0 on Wednesday evening at the Mitchel Athletic Complex.
Hofstra (1-2-1) scored the only goal of the game when Daley and senior forward Aboubacar Camara broke free on a two-on-one breakaway. Camara's initial shot from just inside the penalty area was saved by Wildcat goalkeeper Sean Teesdale (Blue Bell, Pa.), but Daley was there to tap the ball into the empty net from eight yards out for Hofstra's first goal of the season.
Villanova (2-3-0) twice came within inches of tying the game in the closing minutes. Senior back Jim Curtin (Oreland, Pa.) had a header from 12 yards out that hit off the right post and trickled along the goal line before being saved by Brooke with just under 15 minutes remaining. Then, with around one minute left, junior midfielder Brian Ahern (Washington, D.C.) took a shot on a scramble from inside the penalty area that beat Brooke, but freshman back Stephen Kent headed the ball off the goal line to preserve the lead for the Pride.
Hofstra outshot the Wildcats 16-9, including 13-2 in the first half. Villanova was shut out for the third straight game and has not scored in the last 276 minutes of action.
Villanova returns to action on Sunday afternoon in a Big East matchup when St. John's comes to the Soccer Complex at 1:00 p.m.
