Sept. 1, 2000
VILLANOVA, PA.--- On Friday, Sept. 1, the Villanova University women's soccer team defeated Fairfield University in overtime, 2-1, to win its 2000 home opener at the Villanova Soccer Complex. Sophomore Quinn Sellers headed in the game-winning goal 5:59 into the first overtime for the Wildcats, who improve to 1-1-0 with the victory. The Stags of Fairfield fall to 0-2-1 with Friday's loss.
The game went scoreless into intermission, as Villanova junior goalkeeper Janel Schillig saved four first half shots to hold Fairfield without a goal.
At the 49:14 mark of the second half, the Wildcats finally got on the scoreboard. Sophomore Jennifer Carrigan fed freshman Candice MacDonald with a beautiful touch pass, and MacDonald sealed the deal beating Fairfield goalkeeper Anne Lyons on the right side from 10 yards away. The goal was the first collegiate score for MacDonald, who came to Villanova all the way from Pleasanton, Calif.
Just over 10 minutes later, the Stags rallied to tie the score at 1-1. Fairfield's Julie Anne Farman took a pass from Patricia Mendicini and lofted a high crossing pass into the middle of the field to Lauren Bishar who beat Schillig to tie the contest at the 60:22 mark.
Despite several scoring opportunities down the stretch for the Wildcats, the Stags were able to keep the ball out of the net and send the game into overtime knotted at 1-1.
Just 5:59 into the extra session, Villanova put the game away. Sophomore Cary Morrell gave the ball to fellow sophomore Julie Battista on the left side. Battista put the ball up finding Sellers in the middle of the field 10 yards from the net. Sellers headed the ball over Lyons' head giving the Wildcats their first win of the 2000 season.
Schillig got the win in goal, saving six shots on the afternoon. Taking the loss for Fairfield was Lyons, who stopped three Villanova shots.
The Wildcats will resume play on Sunday, Sept. 3, hosting Manhattan College at the Villanova Soccer Complex at 2:00 p.m.
