MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 1, 2000) The Villanova Wildcats got a pair of second half goals to rally from a 1-0 halftime deficit and score a 2-1 victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers in a Big East Conference game played Sunday afternoon.
West Virginia sophomore Chris Renner notched his second career goal at 34:45 of the first half to give WVU (2-7-1/0-4-1) a 1-0 halftime lead. He was assisted by senior Abdul Caulker, his fifth assist of the season. But Villanova's (3-5-2) Chris Edgar scored off a header three minutes into the second period to tie the game. Liam Murphy notched the game-winner off an assist from Joe Caruolo, his second of the game.
Edgar's goal came off a pair of headers. Sophomore Steven Leaman also was awarded an assist on the gamewinner, which came at the 57:56 mark of the game.
Wildcat goalkeeper John Williams saved 13 shots while Mountaineer freshman keeper Chris McKinney, making his first career start, stopped two shots.
Villanova improved its record to 3-5-1 overall, 1-3-1 in the Big East. The Wildcats came away with three points in a critical three-game road stretch that began last weekend at Providence and Boston College. The 'Cats return to the Main Line for another important Big East Conference encounter this Wednesday at noon against the Georgetown Hoyas.
