On Saturday, Sept. 4, the Villanova University women traveled to Mt. St. Mary's College and came away with an 8-1 victory in its season opener. The Wildcats are currently 1-0 with the win over the Mountaineers.
Villanova dominated singles as well as the doubles competition, as it won five the day's six doubles matches. In No. 1 singles, Julie Darne beat Jen Holiday 6-3 and 7-5. The Wildcat's Ashley Young defeated Jackie Pitts in No. 2 singles 6-3 and 6-1. In No. 3 singles, Megan Lacroix won by the scores of 6-2 and 6-4 over Mitra Pitts. Other Villanova winners included Anne Morgan over Chris Pizzica (1-6, 6-3 and 7-6) and Katie Cooper over Lisa Mondello (6-4 and 6-2).
In doubles play, Darne and Young teamed up in the No. 1 spot to win 8-4 over Holiday and Pitts. Lacroix and Morgan combined to defeat Mitra Pitts and Erin Newsome 8-4 in No. 2 doubles, while Farrell and Michelle Wells beat Pizzica and Mondello 8-2 in No. 3 doubles.
The Wildcats will resume their schedule against La Salle on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 3:00 p.m.
