Sept. 4, 1999

Villanova, Pa.--- On Saturday, Sept. 4, at the Villanova Soccer Stadium on the campus of Villanova University, the Villanova soccer team was defeated by La Salle University, 2-1, in a physical Philadelphia Soccer Seven contest. With the loss, the Wildcats' record falls to 1-1-0 overall on the season. The Explorers of La Salle remain undefeated at 2-0-0 with the win.

Just 6:20 in the first half, La Salle got on the scoreboard as forward Lou Daniele knocked a one timer past Villanova goalkeeper Matt Malek. Explorer midfielder Stephen Kohut passed the ball to Shawn Lafferty who found Daniele for the game's first goal.

Just 3:24 later, the Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 on a magnificent play by midfielder Conor Porter. Porter took the ball on a pass from Joe Noonan and hit forward Dave Francalangia with a perfectly placed pass, which Francalangia put in for his first goal of the season.

The game went scoreless until the 37:27 point of the first half when the Explorers took the lead once again. Steven Gachineiro scored for La Salle off assists from Jason Corcoran and Kohut, to give the Explorers a 2-1 halftime lead.

The second half was a defensive battle, with neither team able to get its offense in gear. La Salle goalie Don Tuohey made three-second half saves, including a stop on a breakaway by Francalangia with time winding down in the game, to give the Explorers the 2-1 victory.

The Wildcats will resume play on Wednesday, Sept. 8, as they travel to Seton Hall to take on the Pirates at 3:00 p.m.
