Villanova, Pa.--- On Wednesday, Sept. 22, in women's tennis action, the Villanova University women's tennis team lost to the UMBC Retrievers 8-1. With the loss, the Wildcats fell to 2-1 overall on the season.

Villanova's lone victory on the afternoon came by Stephane Ariot in the No. 5 position. Ariot defeated Carrie Koncilja of UMBA 1-6, 6-4 and 7-6. In No. 1 singles, Wildcat Julie Darne won the first set against Nicole Russo, 6-5. Russo rallied to win the final two sets, however, 6-0 and 6-3, to take the victory.

Kathryn Wheatley, Karri Bielewicz, Anita Pushpanathan and Karina Moking each won in straight sets for UMBC. Wheatley defeated Ashley Young in No. 2 singles 6-1 and 6-4. Bielewicz beat Meghan Lacroix in No. 3 singles 6-1 and 6-2. Pushpanathan won 6-2 and 6-2 over Jen Zick 6-2 and 6-2. In No. 6 singles, Moking defeated the Wildcats' Liz Farrell 6-1 and 6-1.

The Wildcats will get back into action on Thursday, Sept. 23, hosting St. Joseph's at 3:30 p.m.
