Wildcats Victorious Over Lafayette

On Wednesday, April 14, in their last home match of the 98-'99 season, the Villanova men's tennis team defeated the Lafayette College Leopards 6-1. The Wildcats have won eight of their last nine matches now and are focusing on the finishing the season victoriously on their way to the Big East tournament in Miami, Florida.

In the last home match as Wildcats, Stephen Smith and Wilhelm Lubbe played with determination and dedication. Smith, a senior out of Fort Smith, Arkansas, competed against Lafayette's Adrian Smith-Mansky at the second singles and posted a winning score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. At No. 6 singles, Wil Lubbe took on Chris Ginley of the Leopards but, after three sets of hard competition, he fell to Ginley 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles action for Villanova, both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairs were winners. Nova's Casey Simmons and A.J. Rohde set back the Leopards' Smith-Mansky and Vadivan Mani by a score of 9-7. At the No. 3 mark, Josh Schofield and Chris Gonzalez posted a score of 8-2 over Michael Levey and Chris Ginley of Lafayette.

The Wildcats resume play on Friday, April 16 when they travel to Jamaica, N.Y. to take on Big East rival St. John's.
