Men's Tennis Fights Strong at Big East Championships

April 22, 1999

No upsets were recorded in the first day of competition at the 1999 BIG EAST Men's and Women's Tennis Championship, held at the University of Miami's Neil Schiff Tennis Center and Tennis Center at Crandon Park, as each of the higher seeded teams in both the men's and women's draw advanced.

The closest call came on the men's side where 10th-seeded Villanova nearly pulled off the upset win over No. 7 Providence. However, the Friars prevailed 4-3. The Wildcats won the initial doubles point and followed up with wins at first and second singles. Providence grabbed each of the four remaining singles positions to guarantee the win.

The Wildcats will resume play on Friday, April 23 at 9a.m. against the Seton Hall Pirates.
